Bokashi Bucket....Update
We have had the Bokashi Bucket for two weeks so it is still early days yet but we are finding it extremely easy to use and are noticing how much less is going into the waste bin.
This is important, but could become even more important if your local council decides to charge you by the weight of your household rubbish, as has been suggested by the present government. It is a good idea to start thinking of this now, so if it does happen , it would not be so much of a problem .
We keep our Bokashi bin in a cupboard next to the kitchen sink so that it is easy to add your waste and is out of the way. The blue bucket contains the active bran which is the key to this composting system.
If you would like to know more about Bokashi and the EMpowered bran you can go to Heathers blog at Wiggly Wigglers where there is an article about the history of Bokashi composting.

Hi Ruth,
Okey cokey, how are the coffee grounds doing or are they all washed away?
Cheers Mark
great concept..am hearing about it for the first time....i understand what u mean when u talk about being charged for the household rubbish by weight ....we were visiting a fried in Netherlands and could not believe that they are charged that way......coming from US, it was a revelation!!!
Well This is all new to me, Mark. I'll need to look into this when we get back from Chelsea. thanks for the info and the link ti wiggly wigglers. I also loved your blog from ystrdy of the grasshopper and the ox-eyes and the gorgeous baby-blue speedwell. Around here, we call it cats' eyes. Great piccies. Well done!
If you click on my blog and there's no new post...there are always my photo blogs, which others have recently been discovering :)
Hi Moi,
The thing i like about the Bokashi is when it matures you can add it to your veggie patch, it adds different organisms from normal compost so it's got to be a win win situation.
As with paying for your rubbish by weight, i dont have that much of a problem with it, it's just that you know the council will charge silly money, then you get people fly tipping all over the place. So far they have only talked about charging you, how about reimbursing you if you recycle loads and only have a small amount of waste, it seems to me it's all stick and no carrot.
Do you have much recycling going on where you live?
Hi Wildlife Gardener,
It is a bit different to normal composting but i think once you get into the habit it will be more benificial. The problem at the minute is that were the bucket is kept was the bin cupboard and i keep going there when i want to put rubbish into the bin ,which is not there anymore.
Enjoy Chelsea, it is somewhere i must go to one day.
I have added your photo blog link to mine and have paid you a visit, i like the blubells and the oxeyed dasies.
Cheers Mark
Thanks for the update on the Bokashi, I'm still thinking about it but the wormery is my baby at the moment! :)
Hi Akelamalu,
Or many babies when they have settled in!!!!
Hi Mark,
That is a very interesting composting project you have there.
I just chuck my household waste in my outdoors compost pile and Mother Nature takes over, air and all.
You commented on my blog today that you find it interesting that states in the US are often identified by their favorite alcoholic drinks. I guess I should have mentioned moonshine as Arkansas' own. One of my Arkansas readers did mention it.
Thanks for this post, I've never heard of this before. I'll have to see if there is something like this in the States.
Hi Mr Brown Thumb,
If you want to find out more you can get in touch with Heather at Wiggly Wigglers, they send stuff all over the world.
Cheers Mark
Can the 'pickled' results from Bokashi fermentation be put into a wromery?
Yes they can, the worms then break it down into normal looking compost which you can then add to yoyr garden. I will be adding half of my bucket into my wormery next week and half into the compost bin.I will put a post up about it.
Cheers Mark
