Richards Family Day

As promised yesterday here are some images from the Family day held at the Wiggly Wigglers farm in Herefordshire.
I was there in my capacity as photographer, having been asked by Heather. It was a slight departure from the type of photography that I normally do so I was quite excited by the idea.
The day was to follow an itinerary, which included , learning about worms, pond dipping, meeting the pigs, lunch, having a trailer ride around the farm and making a bug box.

The families split into two groups, one stayed with Richard to look at and learn about worms and how useful they are.

The second group went over to the Wiggly pond to do some pond dipping, after being shown how to by Roger. It was really interesting watching all the children and their parents enjoying the dipping and seeing what they could find.

Newts, snails, water boatmen, diving beetles and all sorts of other things were skillfully caught.

I think the adults were enjoying it as much as the children.

After the worms and pond dipping the two halves met up and went to see the Wiggly pigs. In a previous post I asked the question, do the pigs get named? Well 6 weeks on they have no name , which is the right decision , as they will be eaten towards the end of the year.

Farmer Phil met the families at the pig field, gathered all his new friends together and told the group all about the pigs. He went on to explain what the idea was behind getting them and their future plans for more pigs.

The Large Black pig has a party trick, which delighted the children. If you rub its back it will lay down and roll over so after much vigorous rubbing over it went to every ones amusement.
After the pigs it was the most important part of the day, Lunch.
I left the group at this point to print off the photographs so the families could take them away with them.
While I was doing this the families went on a trailer ride around the farm and fields coming back about 40 minutes later to finish off the day by making a bug box.
Just as they were finishing I had the pictures done and gave them to each of the families, which was a nice memento of a very enjoyable day which I'm sure parents and children will remember.
The memory that I will take away from the day would be image of the children really enjoying themselves, getting dirty and interacting with nature. In an age where children tend to stay in their homes, for various reasons, it is good to see them taking this opportunity to explore the wider world.
