Grown, Picked And Eaten....

Grown, Picked And Eaten....

It has been quite a momentous day here in the vegetable plot.

The first produce of the year, the Scarlet Globe Radishes were ready to eat. After last years effort that was a bit lacking, this year is definitely much better and it's all down to the raised bed.

A quick wash to remove the soil

Then the taste, you couldn't get any fresher than 5 minutes after picking them to eating them. I have not been a fan of radishes before but after tasting these I am now and will be sowing them every 3 weeks from now on to get a nice succession throughout the summer.

I can thoroughly recommend everyone to have a go a growing your own as it is such a thrill to go out into your garden and eat something you have grown.

Go on give it a go....

Yum - are they a 'hot' tasting variety? They look very good!

You asked about the deadnettle variety over at my place. It's called Hermans Pride - makes a nice change from the usual White Nancy variety. It's a great little plant to edge a shady border. It gets a little leggy towards the end of the summer, but a good haircut brings it back like yesterday's photo. Insects love it too - so a good all round plant in my view and much tamer than its stinging cousin!

Glad you have a patch near your signal box - though as you say, it does need to be kept in check a little. Luckily I can add any 'tamings' to my compost heaps.

Have a great weekend!

Mark - another update on my comment. Gardeners at Chelsea in 2004 were warned not to plant this variety as it can be invasive. I've put up an update on my blog.

I obviously haven't quite got it in the right place as it's been very well behaved for me.

Hi VP,
Thanks for the name of the dead nettle, I will add it to my wish list as I know of just a spot for it.
As to its stinging cousin, they are a much misunderstood plant but do need to be in the 'rightplace'.

Cheers Mark

Lovely Mark, there is nothing like picking your own and then chomping on them. I love radishes, the hotter the better....yum.
Enjoy.

Radishes are as good as it gets, Mark. Growing up, Mother daily graced our salads with freshly picked crisp radishes.(I was a naughty child, loving to sneak into the neighbor's gardens and steal sun-warmed tomatoes and peppers). Although I don't grow radishes in my garden, memories make them a MUST and am never without them. Lovely photos ;)

Radishes are great to grow with kids. They're fast and the picking is fun. I've just read somewhere that they are also one of the foods you should eat if you have asthma. Nice photos!

Radishes really do taste better fresh from the garden, don't they? And they are almost instant gratification since they sprout so quickly.

You need something hotter before you start snorting flames. But they do look good. I'm the only one in the family that likes radishes and since my wife is the vegetable planter I don't get to see any.

I did have a good laugh yesterday at the grocery store. I spotted a huge bin of dandelion greens. What made it funny was the fact that I passed at least 20,000,000 dandelions on the way to town. I estimate there are a good 100,000 every 1/10 of a mile.
